  • Track Out Day for Quarter One is Friday, September 28th.

E.L. Education:

Today the students worked on their end of unit assessment in literacy. This assessment had two components, one focused on their ability to participate verbally in a discussion group and the second portion was written that focused on the how Jack (the main character)'s view on poetry has changed over time. This week the students will finish reading the book, Love That Dog and they will focus on analyzing the things and the people (poets) that inspired Jack to write poetry. They will be choosing one of the poets that inspired Jack to focus on and eventually construct an informational essay that provides proof to how and why that poet inspired him.

How to Help Your Child at Home:

  • Continue to read poetry aloud with your student and invite him or her to find poems or a poet that he or she particularly likes.

  • Help your student practice reading aloud fluently and accurately.

  • Talk to your student about the meaning of the poems he or she is reading and what inspired the poet. Encourage your student to find evidence of that inspiration in the poems.

Math:

This week in math, the students finish up their unit on multiplicative comparisons, factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers with a test on Tuesday. For the remainder of the week, the students will work on solving problems involving fixed areas and fixed perimeters. They will also be working on formulating conclusions between area and perimeter.

How to Help Your Child at Home:

  • Have your child share with you how to calculate the area and perimeter of a fixed rectangular shape.

  • Have your child create a real world word problem that involves area and perimeter.

Social Studies:

This week, in Social Studies the students will continue to learn about creating budgets to calculate income, spending and savings. On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday the students will be presenting their North Carolina Industry Projects to the class. They will end this social studies unit next Monday with an open notes assessment to showcase what they have learned this quarter. On Tuesday, they will start science with Mrs. Wade.

How to Help Your Child at Home:

  • Share with them how you create a budget for your household and help them create one for themselves at home, especially if they earn an allowance.

  • Have your child practice their North Carolina Industry Project for you in preparation to them presenting it to the class later this week.
