E.L. Education:

This week the students will be choosing and focusing on one of the three following authors: Valerie Worth, Robert Frost, and Walter Dean Myers. The students will research the background of their expert poet and read more of their poems to answer the guiding question: "What inspires writers to write poetry?" After collecting their research, the students will work on constructing an essay that focuses on that guiding question. They will be using the Painted Essay Template below to help them organize and structure their paper.

How to Help Your Child at Home:

  • Which poet did you choose to research?

  • Tell me more about some of the background information that you learned about your poet.

  • What do you think inspired your poet to write? What evidence of this do you find in his/her poems?

Math:

This week in math the students will work on place value. They will focus on reading numbers, writing them out in written form, and drawing (using base 10 drawings) to the millions. It is important that the students understand that each place value is 10 times the place value before it. For example, the hundreds place is 10 times the tens place. They will also work on comparing large numbers using <, >, or =. The students will take an assessment on this concept on Monday, September 10th.

How to Help Your Child at Home:

  • How would you read the following number: 2,548,394?

  • Show me how to make a base ten drawing of the number 4,596.

  • How are the 8’s in the number 8,888 similar and different?

Science:

This week in science, the students will wrap up the investigation into mineral hardness by completing the scratch test. Then, they will discuss the difference between rocks and minerals and learn about the three types of rocks.

How to Help Your Child at Home:

Please continue to use the science links on Ms. Wade's website to help your child with concepts discussed in class.
