  • Mark your calendars for MES's Fall Festival on Friday, September 28th from 6-9PM.

  • We will track back in on Monday, October 22nd. First Quarter report cards will go home on Friday, October 26th.

E.L. Education:

This week, the students will work on writing a new three paragraph essay on what inspired them to write their poem. They will be finding evidence in their word choice to support their inspiration behind writing the poem. Your child will also practice reading poetry fluently and with expression. Today, the students worked together to create an anchor chart on how to what fluent reading sounds like.

How to Help Your Child at Home:

  • Have your child share with you the poem that your child wrote and have them explain their inspiration behind writing it.

  • Have your child read a poem aloud to you, practicing reading it fluently. Have them share with you what fluent reading sounds like.

Math:

This week in math the students will work on solving multi-step word problems. They will be using the CUBES (see below) strategy to help them. This is in preparation for their final assessment on Wednesday, September 26th, which will cover addition and subtraction using the standard algorithm and solving multi-step word problems. On Thursday and Friday, the students will learn strategies for solving word problems involving elapsed time.

CUBES Strategy for Problems Solving:

C - Circle the key numbers

U - Underline the question

B - Box in any math action words

E - Eliminate unnecessary information / Evaluate how you will solve the problem

S - Solve and check your work.

How to Help Your Child at Home:

  • Ask your child to take you through the CUBES Strategy for Problem Solving.

  • Next quarter the students will be learning about multi-digit multiplication. If they still need help practicing their single digit fast facts, please take the time over break to study with them.

Science:

This week in science the students are examining how the sun, earth, and moon affect day and night, as well as moon phases. They will need to continue the moon phases next quarter. Over track out, take some time to enjoy the moon! We will be observing and drawing what we see during 2nd quarter in order to help us understand better.
