Classroom Update - Week of June 10th

Updates/Reminders:

  • Fourth graders will be taking the EOGs on Wednesday, June 19th (Reading) and Thursday, June 20th (Math). Please let me know ASAP, if you know that your child will be out either of those day, so we are able to plan accordingly.

  • Please mark your calendar for our End of the Year Class Party on Monday, June 24th from 12:30-1:15 at the picnic tables in front of the bus parking lot. We will be celebrating with Mrs. Wade's class. Parents and family members are invited. This celebration will be during lunch and we will have a special treat as a dessert.

  • Friday, June 28th is the last day of school. Report cards will be sent home this day, as well.

  • Meet the Teacher for Track Four will be on Friday, July 26th. The times for this event will be released soon.

E.L. Education:

This week, the students will finish their theme literary essay on the novel The Hope Chest. They will be revising and editing their paper to ensure that each paragraph is complete with the Fab 5 (have your child share this with you) and clear conventions (grammar, spelling, punctuation & capitalization). We will also spend the remaining days leading up to our EOG reviewing the three main genres (nonfiction, fiction, & poetry) and reviewing important strategies that good readers use.

How to Help Your Child at Home:

  • Have your child with you what makes a Fab 5 paragraph and explain to you why each of these components is important to a complete paragraph.

  • With the homework passages, encourage your child to carefully think about and find textual evidence to support their answer choices and discuss those answer choices together.

Math:

We have finished learning all of the new materials for quarter four last week and will spend this week and next working on reviewing some of the concepts that we have covered this year. Today, we reviewed prime & composite numbers, and for the remainder of this week we will review graphing, geometry and fractions concepts. Please continue to encourage your child to review these math concepts using Education Galaxy and stress the importance of showing their work when solving problems.

Questions to Ask Your Child at Home:

  • Which concepts do you feel are your strengths?

  • Which fourth grade concepts do you feel like you still need to practice?

Social Studies:

This week the students will continue to analyze how North Carolina's landscape has changed over time and learn more about things that can be done and are being done to help the natural systems in which we live. Later this week, the students will analyze the impact that technology has had on our society and the benefits and challenges that that they provide.

Questions to Ask Your Child at Home:

  • How has North Carolina's landscape changed over time?

  • What things can we do to help our environment?

  • Tell me more about some of the technology that we have used over time. What are some benefits and challenges these technologies provide?
