Upcoming Events / Reminders:

  • Math EOG Scores will be going home tomorrow in Tuesday Folders.

  • Our class will be celebrating all of the hard work we have done with our poetry unit throughout this quarter by having a Poetry Reading for Parents next Thursday, September 26th at 1:20PM in our classroom. Hope to see you there!

  • Morrisville is helping the Krishnan Family Foundation raise awareness and donate band-aids for this special cause. This Cary based family lost their 4 yr old daughter to cancer last year and their 11 year son is being treated for colon cancer at UNC/ Boston’s Children's Hospital. Let's show Mustang support by brining colorful, kid friendly band-aids to school to be donated to local children's hospitals!

  • The PTA Reflections registration has begun. If you are interested, you can find out more information about the Reflections program by clicking on the following link - http://www.wakepta.org/reflections-2019-20.html.

  • Track Out Day for Quarter One is Friday, September 27th.

  • Friday, 9/6 – Make up day Saturday, December 7

  • On these days, the building will open at 8:45am, instruction begins at 9:15am and dismissal starts at 12:45pm. Breakfast will be served on these days, but not lunch. Please make sure to provide your child with a snack or two on these days.

E.L. Education:

This week, the students will work on writing a new three paragraph essay on what inspired them to write their own original poem. They will be finding evidence in their word choice to support their inspiration behind writing the poem. Your child will also practice reading poetry fluently and with expression.

How to Help Your Child at Home:

  • Have your child share with you the poem that your child wrote and have them explain their inspiration behind writing it.

  • Have your child read a poem aloud to you, practicing reading it fluently. Have them share with you what fluent reading sounds like.

Math:

This week in math the students will take their place value test on Tuesday and then work on adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm. The students will start the week by reviewing the different methods for subtraction with regrouping, and then they will solely focus on the standard algorithm. They will also cover concepts such as subtracting across zeros and using estimation to solve real world problems. This unit will continue into next week with a greater focus put on multi-step word problems.

How to Help Your Child at Home:

  • Help your child add and subtract larger number using the standard algorithm (the universal method that I'm sure we were all taught) especially focusing on regrouping and ungrouping numbers.

  • Ensure that your child has their addition and subtraction fast facts memorized (so they do not have to count on their fingers).

Science:

This week, the students will study how earthquakes and volcanoes change the earth. Then, they will begin a review of rivers by completing stream table models. Finally, the students will begin learning about fossils and what they reveal about changes in living things and the earth. They should continue recording the phase of the moon each night. If the moon is not visible, student may use moongiant.com.

How to Help Your Child at Home:

The unit test will be Wednesday, 9/25/19. At this time, students should be reviewing their notes at least 10 minutes each night. Then, by studying a few extra minutes next week, they should be ready for the test. (Students will not be able to use their notes during the test.) The test will include landforms and fossils. It will not include moon phases.
